Go Green And Clean With Baking Soda
Are you hooked on those wonderfully bubbly cleaners that smell of a pine covered forest
? I understand. They are fun to use, but they are also toxic and expensive. Let's get rid of them, shall we? If I told you that there is an everyday household product that will clean your house without poisoning your children or the environment would you try it? Well, there is such a product, and you've probably already got a box in your kitchen.
I'll bet you have a box of Baking Soda in your refrigerator. Like most folks, you have been putting a box of Baking Soda in your fridge for as long as you can remember, probably because your mother or grandmother did the same thing. You know it's a good idea, but do you have any idea the multitude of jobs your Baking Soda can do around the house?
Baking Soda is non-toxic, which is one of the reasons you use it to deodorize your refrigerator. What you may not know is that Baking Soda is also a food-safe cleanser. Does it make you a bit nervous to spray some of those super-powerful cleaners on your countertops and around your food preparation areas? Well, it should. Those toxic cleaning products have no business being around your food. Instead, dissolve 1/2 cup of Baking Soda in about a gallon of warm water. Swish it around until it dissolves and then, using some clean clothes or paper towels, wash off your stove, counters, cutting boards, and any utensils or appliances that are used in food preparation. Be sure to rinse all your surfaces very well with warm water. Now, your kitchen is fresh, free of grease, and non-toxic!
I like to wash my fruits and vegetables when I get them home from the farmers market or grocery store; not just with running water, but with something to really get them clean. I know there are special food washing solutions that I could buy, but I much prefer using a little Baking Soda in my water to ensure that I get all the outside world dirt and germs off my food. Just mix about a tablespoon or so of Baking Soda in a big clean bowl of fresh cold water. Swish around your veggies and fruit, like apples, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, or whatever you normally would wash. Use a paper towel to give them a good scrubbing if you wish, then rinse them all under cold running water. Now they should all be squeaky clean. That's some REALLY fresh food!
If you've been buying expensive cleansers for your coffee or tea pot trying desperately to get the stains out, try soaking in a solution of 1/2 cup Baking Soda in a sink full of hot water. This works well also for all your favorite mugs that are getting stained. On the same note, any pot, pan, casserole, or platter that has seen better days will shine like brand new after a healthy scrub with a generous application of Baking Soda applied to a sponge. And, you don't have to worry about scratching. It's safe to use on all surfaces.
All those fancy laundry additives can become a real addiction, that's for sure. But, take a look at the ingredients and the price, and you'll soon become a Baking Soda convert like me. For just a few pennies, you can get a detergent booster and a fabric softener all in one load. Add 1/2 cup of Baking Soda to your wash water to balance the pH and help your detergent clean better. Then, add another 1/2 cup of Baking Soda to your rinse water to give the laundry a thorough freshening that leaves everything smelling nice and sweet and clean.
Now, remember that box of Baking Soda you have deodorizing your refrigerator? Every 30 days you'll want to remove the old box and replace it with a fresh box of Baking Soda. What should you do with the old box? Throw it down the drain, of course! Not because it's trash, but because it will clean and freshen your drain. Just dump it right down any drain, even your garbage disposal, let it sit there for about 10 minutes, and then run some warm water down the drain for a few minutes. Now your drains have been freshened up and degreased just like the rest of your kitchen. This will help clean those nasty pipes and keep them smelling nice and fresh.
That same box of Baking Soda you took out of your refrigerator could also be used in your bathrooms. Baking Soda makes an excellent tub and shower cleaner because it's safe to use on fiberglass, is non-toxic, and leaves your bath fresh and clean. Just wet the surfaces down a bit, then grab a sponge, a bucket of warm water, and your box of Baking Soda. You can sprinkle the Baking Soda either on the surfaces or on the sponge, then give the bath and shower a thorough scrubbing from top to bottom. Rinse well with warm water to remove any grit and dirt. Then when it's time for your family to climb in for their baths, you can be reassured that your bathtub is not only clean, but non-toxic!
These are just a few ideas for using Baking Soda around your house. You can avoid using toxic cleaners, and save a lot of money in the process. Baking Soda works, it's inexpensive to use, and it's safe. What more could you want?
