Go With The Flow: Maintaining Your Indoor Fountains

If you're looking to make a powerful statement in your home or office

, then consider adding indoor fountains. An indoor fountain can bring beauty and a sense of peace and tranquility, but it also requires regular maintenance and attention to keep it sparkling. It must be cleaned regularly to avoid the unwanted sight and smell of algae. The easiest way to accomplish this is to add a few drops of bleach, an anti-algae or anti-white-scale water treatment. Do this no more than once a week, and use just one drop per gallon of water. If you use too much bleach, you can permanently mar the finish of your fountain.

Whether you have an indoor floor fountain, tabletop or wall fountain, you should be cleaning it thoroughly every four to six months. The best way to do this is to let the fountain run dry, then wipe it clean with a soft cloth and a cleaner that's safe for whatever material the fountain's made of. You'll also need to find the water pump, take it apart and clean it, too. Don't worry, this sounds more difficult than it actually is. If you're worried, you can always take a picture of the fountain in various stages of disassembly so you remember how to put it all back together.

If cleaning your floor or wall fountains is one of your least favorite chores, you can use distilled water, since it won't leave hard water buildup and will make cleaning much easier. As silly as it sounds, you have to water your indoor fountain. Water evaporates, so the fountain will need to be replenished regularly, although not as often as with an outdoor or garden fountain. A water fountain should contain enough water to keep the pump fully submerged. This step is crucial to prolong the life of the fountain, and it can save you money, since you won't have to replace a burned-out, dry pump. If you notice your water pump is making an unusual amount of noise, then it needs to be cleaned or the water level is too low.

If you follow these simple tips, you'll be sure to preserve the sense of tranquility, peace and calm in your home or office for many years to come.
