Going For A Diabetes Blood Test Was Not As Painful As Expected
Some people make sure that they have regular health check-ups to make sure that everything
is fine and that there are no serious problems which need medical attention. On the other hand there are those of us who do not go to the doctor unless something is wrong even though it may be too late by then. This is what happened when a friend had a diabetes blood test done and was advised to buy a blood sugar monitor.
He had been having a few problems with his health but had dismissed them as either due to the cold weather or advancing middle age. Eventually he was persuaded to visit the doctor for some tests. The first thing was to hook him up to a blood pressure machine and see how his blood pressure was. This was fine but the problems arose when he explained some symptoms tom the doctor and was sent for a diabetes blood test which he had tried to avoid for a while.
He had a long standing fear of needles and since the blood sugar monitor required that he have his finger pricked, he was quite anxious. In the end he decided that it was not as painful as he had expected and realised that he would have to undergo the procedure on a regular basis since his blood sugar was very high. Keeping an accurate idea of your blood glucose levels is an integral part of successful diabetes management. Blood glucose meters allow you to do this at home without having to visit the doctor so often. Regular urine tests are also necessary but you can at least try to manage as much as you can at home.
Apart from diabetes, the other problem which is often overlooked is high, or even very low, blood pressure. During each heartbeat, blood pressure varies between a maximum (systolic) and a minimum (diastolic) pressure. The blood pressure in the circulation is principally due to the pumping action of the heart. Differences in average blood pressure are responsible for blood flow from one location to another in the circulation. The rate of average blood flow depends on the resistance to flow presented by the blood vessels. The average blood pressure decreases as the circulating blood moves away from the heart through the arteries and capillaries due to viscous losses of energy.
There are blood pressure machines which you can buy for use at home and these are either the ones which are strapped on to the wrist, or the ones which are attached to the upper arm, similar to the ones used in the doctors' surgeries. Whichever you decide to go for, make sure that you speak to your doctor first and get some advice about which one would be the best for your needs. As we get older we need to start taking care of our health and try to catch any problems before they arise, or at least while they are still treatable at the early stages.
