Going On A Tibet Tour In Winter
Tibet was covered in secrecy and was considered a mythological kingdom till the haze
of its obscurity was infiltrated in the 19th century by the European explorers. With grasslands and snow capped mountains in the background Tibet is one of the most beautiful places you can ever visit. It has tranquil blue lakes, spectacular monasteries and transparent blue sky. The scene is absolutely breathtaking. You will feel like getting lost in the Tibetan culture and its magical mysteries when you are on a Tibet tour.
It is a cultural treasury and natural wonder that you should definitely not miss. However, if you are hard pressed for cash then you can go in the winter, which is the off-season in terms of tourism in Tibet. Generally, tourists are afraid of the cold weather and hence they avoid visiting Tibet during that season. Winter in Tibet lasts from the month of November to March. It is not as cold as you would have imagined it to be in the winter months.
There is sufficient sunlight even during the coldest season, which is between November-March. Hence, tourists planning for a Tibet tour in winter do not have to be worried about the cold weather. There are regional differences in climate and the temperatures are colder in the western and northwestern part of Tibet. There is little or no snowfall in lower altitude. The snowfall is limited largely to places, which are mainly uninhabited. However, destinations like Mount Kailash are not accessible because of road closures.
During the peak season you will find the top tourist attractions crowded. So, if you want to avoid the rush and experience the beauty and culture at peace then you should definitely visit during the winter months. Whether you are visiting Jokhang temple or Potala Palace it does not matter because you will find these places not overcrowded with Chinese tourists. So, experience the culture and history at peace without being shoved by busy tourists.
One of the main reasons for going on a Tibet tour during winter is to save money. It is highly economical to visit Tibet during the off-season. The accommodations are relatively cheaper during the winter months. The entrance fees at all the cultural sites are much cheaper that what you would find in the peak seasons.
Places like Lhasa, Shigatse, Tsedang and Ningchi can be visited all year round. So, you can at least visit these places during your Tibet tour if you are still apprehensive about the cold. These places are equipped with convenient facilities that would make your trip comfortable and smooth. January and February would be the ideal time for you to visit Lhasa. The place is bathed in sunlight during this time. During February you can enjoy important festivals in Tibet like the Spring Festival and the Tibetan New Year. Before you go for the tour in winter you must work out an itinerary. However, if you are going in the winter Tibet trekking will not be possible.
