Going The Extra Mile After Basic Driving Lessons
Finally learning how to drive is a rite of passage
, one of the most memorable experiences in the life of a teenager. Despite this importance, taking driving lessons is not always taken seriously by new drivers; it is seen as another rule book, another additional homework that must be abhorred. Although like school work, there is indeed a lot or memorising and rote learning in taking driving lessons, it is also much more than this. To paraphrase Spiderman, being able to drive is a power that comes with great responsibility. Learning to drive is similar to being able to transport yourself instantaneously to another place.
Those who will be behind the wheel for the first time in their lives must remember that there are many lives at stake on the road -- there are pedestrians, other drivers and their passengers, passers-by, and the drivers own life. So in addition to basic driving lessons, both a new driver and the general public will benefit if drivers go the extra mile. Additional effort on the part of drivers can only lead to better and safer roads.
1.Safety courses
A new driver can enrol in safety courses, aside from the minimum driving lessons and competency required by the government for a license. You can check your local government if there are safety lessons offered for adult and teen drivers. Also, insurance companies would favour drivers who went through the extra effort of taking safety classes; some companies offer discounted premiums and other bonuses to those drivers who take safety courses.
2.Always check your cars safety features
Before driving the car on the road, always make sure that its safety features are working as they should, or if they are adjusted correctly. This means that you should check the following -- (1) the mirrors are oriented at the proper angle to give you the view from behind, (2) the seats are properly adjusted, you can rest your feet on the pedals easily and comfortably, and that the backrest is upright, (3) the gas gauge shows that you have enough gas for your trip, (4) there are no obstructions to the windshield and it is free from cracks, (5) the steering wheel is adjusted to your height and reach. If you will be dependent on using navigation equipment and GPS, always check that they are charged or plugged into the car charger.
