Recently Maradino Foods in Hartford, CT saved 289,655 kilowatt hours in one year (enough electricity to power 443 homes for a year) by retrofitting their lighting fixtures, replacing magnetic ballasts with electronic ballasts and using more energy efficient lighting. They also installed retrofit night covers manufactured by Econofrost on their open refrigerated cases which will generate a lifetime savings of over 651,400 kilowatt hours.

Another store, Ancona Market in Ridgefield, CT has also embraced green technology and made improvements to convert their family store to a more eco-friendly design. They achieved their green goals by instituting re-usable cloth bags instead of plastic ones, they purchase seasonal produce from local farmers reducing the carbon footprint required to bring items to market, and they also incorporated Econofrost night covers which reduced their electric consumption by 20 percent.

For other stores its the simple implementation of the right lighting. LEDs are making a big splash in retail shops and grocery stores are no different. For the smart retailer, a combination of LEDs in the store and food safe lighting in their perishable food display cases, like Promolux, offers considerable return in terms of merchandising appeal, extended shelf life and energy savings.
