Gold Prospecting:

Gold Prospecting:

Is the searching for precious metals, minerals or fossils? Although most prospectors are generally only interested in finding precious metal (such as gold) there are many things that are sought by numerous people all around the world. However we will stay close to the road and stick with precious metals as well. Over the last couple of decades prospecting has increasingly become more and more of a hobby for many people, both young and old. It is a relaxing way for people to get out and enjoy nature as well as providing exercise. Over the years however more and more people have incorporated it into part of their life style and some have even made prospecting their career. Don't be mistaken however; prospecting generally involves some rather intensive physical labor. It can involve a considerable amount of travel (usually on foot or horseback), panning, sifting, researching, investigating and time.

Although prospecting can involve quite a bit, with all the possible resources that are available today it is a lot easier than it used to be. Traditionally prospecting would involve careful and intense study of the territory. Searching the creek beds, along ridgelines, combing hilltops and scouring area bedrock for signs of gold. If gold was found, then all the rivers and streams in the area were panned looking for a show of color (signs of gold). Generally these areas were not very promising and the prospecting would not last long. However there were some occasions when a prospector would "strike it rich" and then would be joined by other prospectors and the area would attract a large mining force. These events were known as "Gold Rushes". These rushes lured prospectors with the promise of gold, and untold riches. The majority of these early prospectors had no training, or experience and relied on luck to find their wealth.

Metal detectors can only pick up objects within a limited depth. The common depth for a metal detector is approximately 30 centimetres. Which can vary greatly depending on numerous factors:

A) The metal detector's capacity.

B) The soil.

C) The object's Halo (some old objects tend to pass conductivity to the ground next to it, making it easier to detect).

D) Size of Object.

E) Type of Material.

A good metal detector in good conditions might find objects buried up to a meter deep. Fortunately, most buried objects are just 20-50 centimetres deep (depending on the soil) which leaves us with many possibilities to find new treasures.

There are currently three main metal-detection technologies:

Beat-frequency oscillation (BFO)

Very low frequency (VLF)

Pulse induction (PI)

It is out of the scope of this article to go deeper into details about these technologies, but nevertheless; VLF is the most widely used of them all. Additionally, each technology has its benefits; but VLF tends to be better and less expensive. For more information about this, refer to my other articles.

The technology used for metal detection matters very little as they all have an unique purpose - to find what is hidden underneath the ground. Newer metal detectors have very advanced software incorporated in them which allow the user to change the "minimum object" to simply ignore small coins or other very small objects.

Treasure hunting itself has been a practice going on for thousands of years. It is in our advantage that we have some very good technology to help us find them easier and faster - Metal Detectors.

Placer Mines:Placer Mining is the most common form of mining, it involves mining gold that has been washed away from it's mother lode (or source) and deposited in small cracks, holes, or sand bars in the mainstream of a river.. It almost always involves the use of water in some way or another. Placer mining tools generally include the rocker box, sluice, dredge, high banker, shaker table, dry washer, and always the pan. Placer Claims are 20 acres, and many modern miners have their own placer claim.

Hard Rock mine: A hard rock mine is a tunnel that is dug into solid rock for the sole purpose of finding valuable or precious rocks, minerals, or metals. Gold originates deep within the earth in places called Pockets. The pockets are filled with gold, heavy ore, and quartz.

VLF (very low frequency) ground cancelling metal detectors work on the principle of conductivity. These metal detectors will locate any metal with a conductive surface within 45-60 cm (18" to two feet) of the ground surface. A signal is heard because an electromagnetic field is generated and caused to flow out into space away from the search coil. As the lines of the electromagnetic field penetrate the surface of the metal, tiny circulating electrical currents called eddy currents are caused to flow in the surface of the metal. These eddy currents then generate their own electromagnetic fields which radiate in all directions in space. Those currents which radiate directly upwards toward the receiver's search coil windings are picked up. A reduced voltage is then fed into the amplifying wires where it is conditioned to drive a loudspeaker, meter or headphones. The larger the surface, the greater the signal.

Metal detectors do not react to mass but to surface area. In other words, a flat coin will make a larger signal than a coin on its edge.

Treasure hunting is the common name for a fun and interesting hobby enjoyed by thousands of people around the world. They use portable metal detectors to go outside and literally hunt for treasure.

The FMDAC

In order to help you get started in treasure hunting, you should check out the Federation of Metal Detector and Archaeological Clubs, Inc. You can find out about any events, meeting or treasure hunting clubs in your area. You can find out where to legally go look for gold in treasure hunting. Usually, you have to go to state parks and public property unless you are invited onto someones private property. And its not just a pipe dream to find gold treasure hunting in this way. People have actually found very valuable items, from gold coins to gold artefacts.

You also need to know your areas municipal codes, which the FMDAC can help you find. Sometimes, you can legally go treasure hunting in public schools, church grounds and public beaches with metal detectors. You might even be asked by neighbours to help locate utility pipelines on their property or to find lost trinkets in their back yards.
