Even though only a handful of jewelers continue to make rings and trinkets themselves at their bench, the ability to smelt the gold and cast it into a custom form is something that requires a certain amount of gold to be in stock. Taking the tailings of their work and reconstituting them into a more useful gold standard, master jewelers are able to create the items that are demanded by discriminating buyers. For large chain stores that operate coast to coast the ability to buy premade ring settings and chains from the precious metal refiners allows each retail outlet to carry the same stocks and advertise their wares nationally. Through purchasing multiple pieces of gold bands, lockets, chains, pendants and earrings, jewelers can carry an inventory that is impressive, yet consistent throughout each of their outlets.

While some masters' work at the jeweler's bench to create custom articles of handmade jewelry for their special clients, others provide finely finished items that are duplicated and ready for display directly from the gold refinery. Regardless of how the items come into being the important role of the precious metal refiners is to keep the supply of gold coming so that people throughout the country can find the perfect complement to their wife, girlfriend, mother or daughter.
