Trophies have a variation in style. There are trophies made especially for a specific kind of event. Trophies made for golf tournament usually have a golf ball. If you have a trophy like this, then it is very unlikely that you are going to award this trophy to the winners of a soccer tournament. It would bring disappointment to them and somehow would make them uncomfortable. They might think that they have participated at the wrong event.

If there are different trophy designs, elements used in trophies also differs. Diverse elements and metals exist in our world. A gold trophy is something. Many people would be envious of you if they learn that you have a gold trophy not just because it is expensive but because of its implications. Having a gold trophy means the institution that gave that to you is credible enough to be able to give you a gold trophy. Given these credits, it means that a gold trophy will add more prestige to your trustworthiness.

How come that gold is valued in our society? Well, gold is one reason why our ancestors began conquering other land. They are searching for this precious metal to use for accessories. But during the ancient times, gold is not just for jewelries. It is also our ancestors' currency. They trade things with other civilizations and pay the goods with gold. This is not always the case though. They can opt to barter or exchange of commodities instead of giving gold. Nevertheless, barter does not lessen a golds value in their time. If you have lots of gold, then you can afford to do many things. You can buy slaves and be act the way you want as long as you have a heaping stock of gold. Well, I am just wondering if there would be a single institution that is willing enough to give a trophy made of diamond. I am willing to bet my life that that competition or whatever reasons it is that they are going to give trophy, will be famous enough in the whole world in no time.

And now, gold is used in making trophies to signify the importance of the winners. It is like we could equate their winnings to the society's high regard in gold. Other metals are also used in making trophies like silver. It is also a precious metal but not as precious as gold. Trophies made of silver are given to runner-ups. The champions of course are given the gold trophy.
