Golden Retriever Training -How To Train A Golden Retriever To Walk On A Leash

Golden Retrievers are one of the most adorable breeds and they are one of the most intelligent, too. It would not be that hard to train your retriever to walk on a leash if you train him while he's still young and especially if you have the right tools and knowledge. Here is a simple but concise guide to help you train your golden retriever.

Home Training:

You have to help him get used to wearing a collar first before you take him out for a walk or else no walking would happen. If you introduce the collar on the same day that you step out of the streets, your pup would just get too busy with this new thing attached on his face that he would not pay attention to anything at all-not even to your commands. At home, attach a tight-fitting collar to his face and let him wear it for hours. Do not remove the collar if he whimpers or else he would think it is bad thing. Just ignore his protests. He will then get tired of complaining and will start to feel "one" with the collar. Do this for three days or so. If you think he's already comfortable with the collar on, you can attach the leash. He will bite the leash and drag it around the house at first like a little kid with a new toy. After a day or two, you can start walking him around the house. Walking your dog inside the house may look silly but this gradual technique is the most effective way to do it.

Out and about:

Now that your pup is more comfortable with the the collar and leash, you are ready to step out of the house! Make sure you bring his favorite treat and something to scoop his poop. The treat is useful to lure him to follow your commands and to reward him for a walking well done!

Once you've stepped out of the door, let your dog sit on your side, facing front just like you. Create a signal like tapping your foot twice or saying " Let's go" before you begin walking him. While you are walking, talk to him, pat him on the back, give him a treat if he followed simple instructions. Once you've started walking your dog on the streets, take him out 2-3 days a week after that. Follow-through is important so it would register in his brain faster.

Some challenges that you might encounter:

If this is the first time your pup has stepped out of the house, then expect him to become very hyper. Everything is new to him and he can't help but be overwhelmed. He may start biting the leash, he may get too eager to go somewhere and would start pulling you to that direction, or he may not want to leave a place and would not move no matter how hard you pull.

If he starts to pull and whimper, stop on your tracks. Do not tug him, just stop moving and act like a tree. If he pulls harder, it is time to tug and lead him to the opposite direction. In order to train an animal, you should show them that you are more powerful and that you are the boss. Now if your pup suddenly wont budge, pull the leash lightly. If that doesn't work, then this is where the treats become useful. Put small bits of his favorite treat on the ground and use it to lead the direction you want him to go.

Leash training should be fun for both the puppy and you. I also advice that you tag a friend along if it is your first time to walk your pup outside your home. He can help you handle the pup if he suddenly throws tantrums. Good Luck!
