The world's richest horse race for two-year old Thoroughbreds is undoubtedly the Golden Slipper Stakes, held on the first Saturday in April at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. The Group 1, 1200 meter sprint event is worth $3.5 million in prize money and is held on what is known as the Golden Slipper Day which features four Group 1 races namely The BMW, the Arrowfield Stud Stakes, the George Ryder Stakes, and the Queen of the Turf Stakes.

Smith achieved great success in the Golden Slipper Stakes, bringing six horses to victory. Smith is followed by Bart Cummings also with six wins and subsequently by Mick Dittman, Kevin Langby and Athol Mulley with three wins.

Many Golden Slipper winners have moved on to become stars of the turf, making it the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup. Australian ace jockey Darren Beadman steered Guineas to victory in the Golden Slipper in 1997. Beadman now enjoys a place in the Australian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

The Golden Slipper sees plenty of betting activity and has always been a favourite with punters. The betting markets open early, however, most often, the top stables bring out a two-year old at the last moment that runs in good time and gets the better of its rivals.
