There are several types of red wine. Depending on how much detail is discussed, the list could be dozens or hundreds. It starts with a high tannin content that creates a distinctive gripping flavor, but most Cabs need to age, which mellows this out.

Some consider the Malbec to be a "populist wine" and it helped put Argentina on the wine map. The Malbec grape is one of the traditional red wine grapes French vintners used, but its place was exclusively as a blending element for years. This perspective has kept its popularity down in France, to this day, despite the fact that Argentine, and more recently Californian Malbecs have achieved a great deal. It is juicy, has clear fruit flavors, and people love it for its straightforward flavors and reasonable price tag.

California Merlot is slightly different from French bottles of this wine, owing to a lack of suitable cool climates and different soil contents. Nonetheless, Merlot is one of the most popular wines in the United States because it is soft and easy to understand and enjoy. Only Cabernet Sauvignon is more grown than Merlot in California. Merlot tends to be soft, and better types are aged in barrels and have slightly more complex flavor profiles that diminish the powerful fruitiness for which they are known in California.

Pinot Noir is another California wine that has slowly garnered international respect. Pinot Noirs from California tend to be fruity, similar to many California wines. It has a complex flavor and what experts describe as a "punch" that makes it incredible to drink. California Zinfandel is a robust-flavored wine that is one of the few California wines that isn't as fruity-flavored as wines grown in cooler climates in Europe. And its strength can vary depending on when the grapes are picked.

These are just a few of the most popular types of red wine, with an emphasis on those reds that are grown especially effectively in California, like the California Zinfandel.
