Goldilocks, What Could Be
A new home planet has been on many scientist agendas, as the sun ages, it will become a
Red Giant, and thus it is predicted that it will engulf the earth in about 4.7 billion years.
Being able to predict the earth's destruction, it's no wonder scientist are hard at work
searching for the next chapter in continuing human existence.
Many planets have been searched and studied as possible destinations for the human race,
but all have been failures. Astronomers continue to scour the universe seeking for a new
home, but nothing interesting was found, until recently. Scientist have discovered a new
earth like planet that has great ability to sustain life. Planets that had been previously
discovered were either too close to a star rendering them too hot for life, or too far leaving
them as frozen wastelands. A planet that could potentially sustain life has to be "just right".
Goldilocks, the recently discovered planet is said to be the sixth of many earth-like planets.
It possesses many earth-like qualities. It's located in the habitable zone, a small band in
space with fair conditions to support life. With the planet so perfect for life, many
astronomers wonder if perhaps we may find extra-terrestrial life, and if we're looking at a
preoccupied planet.
Although Goldilocks is similar to earth in many ways, it also has many distinctive features.
Due to the short distance between Goldilocks and its sun, Gliese 581, the planet completes
its orbit every 37 days, so a year on Goldilocks would be 37 days on Earth. The planet's
close distance to Gliese 581, is due to the fact that Gliese is a white dwarf (a late stage in
the star cycle). Gliese isn't as large as our sun, making the close distance between
Goldilocks possible . Like the moon, Goldilocks doesn't rotate much. This is due to the fact
that the distance between Goldilocks and its sun is so small, that they have become tidally
locked, leaving half of the planet in darkness. Both Goldilocks and Earth are similar in size,
but Goldilocks is slightly larger, and its mass is about 3 times greater than the Earth's. Due
to the difference in mass, gravity will most likely be very different on Goldilocks. Both
planets share similar climates. Temperature ratings on Goldilocks are predicted to be as
cold as 25 degrees below zero, and as hot as 160 degrees. Due to the fact that Goldilocks
rotates very little, the planet has two climate zones, the part facing Gliese being warmer
than the opposite side. The weather on the planet should be constant considering that it
does not rotate on an axis. There's no sign of water on Goldilocks, thus, we can imply that
although its temperature is adequate for water, the atmosphere may not be.
The earth is simply a miracle, a planet of beauty that we as humans have been blessed
with. There are billions of planets in the universe, yet we are still are unable to find anything
like our green paradise. Goldilocks seems to be a possible place for human existence, but
then again, it just may not be enough. As of now Goldilocks may seem to qualify, but any
small imperfection may make it unsuitable for us. From my personal perspective, because
there is no evidence of water, human life on Goldilocks can ever be. Water is vital for all life,
and if there is no water on Goldilocks, then it infers that a something is missing.
Let's skip ahead and say that we discovered that Goldilocks was ripe for life, lets say that
we decided to begin human civilization on Goldilocks. How would we do it? The planet is
about 120 trillion miles from us. Any trip to that distance would require major preparations
and resources. It is estimated that it would take several generations to make the trip. We
would have to find a way to grow food, water, and a fuel source to get us there. Whatever
means we use to get there, it would have to be like a small traveling planet. As of now, we
surely don't have any means to travel such distance, we still have a lot of time on earth, so
some where along the line, we could possibly develop the technology and move. Only the
future can say.
Earth is so perfect in every aspect, that there is simply no replacement. It has sustained life
for millions of years and continues to do so. The uniqueness of our planet is just
remarkable. We are blessed to have the privilege to inherit this planet, with this privilege
also comes the responsible of keeping and taking care of our world.
