We have yet to have a British winner of the British Open this century. The last time was in 1999, when Paul Lawrie of Scotland surprised everyone, including himself, when winning on the Carnoustie links. Since then the tournament has been dominated by the United States with six wins, South Africa can claim one and Ireland the other. Before Lawrie, Nick Faldo had completed a hat trick of wins, when winning at Muirfield in 1992, those three wins followed on from Sandy Lyle who had also won in 1985. There have of course been some close shaves, Colin Montgomerie was second in 2005 and Lee Westwood 4th in 2004 but there has been no-one yet who can emulate the feats of Lawrie, Faldo and Lyle.

Perhaps that will all change this year in the absence of Tiger Woods. Likely British candidates will include, Lee Westwood who is in top form this year and was a very creditable third in the US Open last month, Justin Rose is another who springs to mind for two reasons; one he is the top ranked Briton in the world at the moment and two, he loved Royal Birkdale last time the 'Open' was played there. He was a 17 year old amateur at the time and finished in an incredible fourth place, after scoring a 66 in the second round; that, at the time, was the lowest amateur score ever at an Open Championship. Luke Donald is yet another top ranked and capable player, but who has an appalling record at the Open., he has missed five cuts out of nine played and his best finish to date is a miserable T35th in 2006. Ian Poulter is the next highest ranked 'Brit' at number 39, but again his performances, while considerably better than Donald's, are nothing to write home about. His best is T11th in 2005. Paul Casey another ranked in the top 50 in the world, but his form in Open Championship is just as bad; from six Open starts he has missed three cuts and can only offer a best position of T20th in 2004. It is interesting that Donald, Poulter and Casey play most of their golf on the US PGA tour. Maybe that says it all!

Perhaps the British can hope for a newcomer to shine on the Royal Birkdale links. In Oliver Wilson, they have a player full of enthusiasm, having a great season, a likely Ryder Cup starter and a player eager to make a name for himself. He missed the cut in his only Open appearance last year, but could be the one for the punters to get behind to finish top 'Brit', even if he doesn't quite capture the claret jug. For my money though the best chance lies with Westwood, improvements made to his short game will be vital at Royal Birkdale and Lee plays links golf as good as anyone in the world, except maybe the absent Tiger himself.
