Golf Gear 101

Making the first step and breaking into a new sport can be a daunting task

. Being the "new guy" can be punishing enough with adapting to the new movements, techniques, drills and vocabulary that go along with whatever sport you have jumped into. Opening the door to the world of golf is no different. In order to minimize potential embarrassment for that first day on the green below is a list of the most basic equipment needed to make that first day is right up to par.

Often being criticized as "the wealthy mans" sport, golf has been marginalized by other more high activity sports like football, baseball and tennis. Anyone who has taken a few swings will know that this stereotype is quite incorrect. So speaking of taking a swing, let's talk clubs. For the golfing dilettante it is not necessary to go completely overboard when investing in you first pair of clubs. Pick up something economical but certainly not cheap. A good set of clubs will have the following items within it.

Driver

A driver is usually made out of a high grade titanium and have large heads to them which are perfectly suited for that first shot off the tea insuring that the golf ball travels quite a ways down the green.

Woods

A little misleading in name, these clubs are generally not made from wood anymore but keep then name for more of history's sake, in homage to when they actually were constructed from wood. The clubs will be used once you start taking swings on the fairway.

Irons

Also used for taking shots on the fairway, these clubs will be used to make swings when the distance does not need to be that great. Irons come seven varieties; three, four, five, six, seven, eight and the nine iron.

Wedge

A wedge club is used to make a swing when very close distance is a factor. The head of these clubs are shaped in such a way that when the ball is hit, it will create an arc. Depending on the situation, a golfer will need to utilize either a sand or a lob wedge.

Putter

Putters are also used to make short shots but are made without the changes to the head, giving the golf ball a shot without an arc.

Now that we have established the clubs that will be used, let's take a look at some of the other golf sundries needed for that perfect first day.

Gloves

Golf clubs are used to make sure your grip on the club stays as firm as possible. Golfing without them can cause the shot to be skewed or off as it is nearly impossible to grip the shaft without the traction that a good glove can provide. Getting a perfect fitting glove has the potential to really up your game.

Golf Balls

The debate to how a golf ball should be produced is full of polarized opinions, should it be soft coated? Hard coated? Which brand is the best? While these are all great things to be thinking about once you have been golfing for awhile, they are however not that important for the beginner. Pick up some fairly inexpensive balls as you will be sure to be losing more to brushes, trees and embankments than you will be taking back home.

Golf Bag

Deciding on your first golf bag can also be a intimidating task. With more varieties, makes and models than you can shake a club at you might find yourself scratching your head wondering which one will be right for you. Remember that decadence and extras are all nice, but the fancier you go, the higher the price becomes. Choose something that will get the job done. It should adequately hold all your clubs as well as have a comfortable shoulder strap for easy transportation around the green

When you finally get all of your gear together it's time to head off onto the green. Do some research and see which courses near you offer some great lessons for beginners, whether your first day is on the sweeping fields of Myrtle Beach or the rustic greens of Thousand Hills Golf Resort, you can be assured that you have all the proper equipment for that chance of a perfect, hole in one.
