Golf swing basics are a major element in helping most golfers improve their game

. All amateur golfers (and even some professionals) attempt to replicate the "perfect" basic golf swing (think Tiger Woods on a good day). Focusing on that ellusive perfect swing will lead to more powerful and effortless shots and an overall improvement in scores. The problem is that there is no such thing as a generic perfect golf swing. Each golfer has their own unique perfect golf swing.

You see, each golfers' body is different. Some golfers, like Tiger Woods are tall and lean, others (think John Daley) are a bit larger. So, each golfers swing must be adjusted to accomodate their body type.

Just like with body type, individual golfers have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, some peple are great with their irons, but cannot hit long straight drives. And for many golfers, especially those that play mainly on weekends - they have trouble hitting both irons and drivers.

For some players the real problem is that they have gotten away from golf swing basics. By adding unneeded complexity they have made their golf swing even worse. This usually results in something like a bad slice and a loss of distance. Yes, we try to blame everything else (the weather, the new clubs, bad grass, etc.). But, we know in our hearts that the real problem is our bad golf swing.

In order to gain consistency and shoot lower scores, you need to keep your golf swing simple. Now, obviously just understanding golf swing basics is not enough. You also need to practice your individual swing in order to achieve the results you desire.

If you follow and practice these five basic golf swing rules, you should see your game improve:

1. Alignment is among the most important factors in striking the ball square. The fundamental idea behind a perfect golf swing is to strike the ball in the exact center. Clearly then how you setup to the ball before you swing is the most important factor in the perfect golf swing.

2. Your body needs to be able to rotate easily - so be certain that your stance is comfortable.Think about your backbone - it is the axis on which your entire body rotates. Stick your bottom out in order to determine your overall center of gravity.

3. You must keep your eyes on the ball. This is by far one of the most important essentials of golf swing basics - but is easily ignored on the course.I know it's almost too trivial to talk about, but we'll do it anyway. After all you need to see the ball in order to hit it. Looking up too soon in order to see where your ball went, will usually result in your ball going where you do not want it to go!

4. Your irons and woods are different, so you need to hit them differently.Woods are made to sweep the ball off of a tee - so think about "sweep" when hitting them. Irons are made to pinch the ball off of the ground - so think "pinch" when hitting them.

5. This might sound strange, but try it next time you're on the range.Hum a tune under your breath - it will help you focus and improve your rhythm.


Rhythm is an important element in striking the ball squarely and evenly. Personally, I like to hum country tunes, but anything will probably work.

So, when it comes to your golf swing basics remember the K.I.S.S. rule. The less complex your golf swing is the easier it is to maintain consistency and improve your swing over time.
