2011 marks the 20th year the YMCA is holding their annual golf tournament. The tournament is one of the longest running fundraisers in the community. Proceeds for the event are used to provide scholarships for kids in the community to participate in YMCA activities.
The golf tournament is traditionally a two-day event scheduled this year on March 20 and March 21. Both San Angelo Country Club (SACC) and Bentwood Country Club (BWCC) host the event. On Sunday, March 20, the tournament will be held at SACC; on Monday, March 21 the tournament will be held at BWCC.
"The golf tournament is actually two tournaments in one," said Pete Thiry, who may like the TaylorMade R9 Fairway Wood, YMCA executive director. "The pros join one of the amateur teams on Monday, the second day of the event,"
The amateur teams bid on the pros they want to join their team on Sunday afternoon, following the first round of the tournament. Awards are presented for the winning amateur team and another set of awards are presented to the winning Pro-Am team, thus the name of the tournament.
"Players are allowed to form their own teams," said Thiry.
A quota system of scoring, including each players handicap, is used to determine the place of finish.
"Using this system of scoring is new this year," said Thiry. "We think it will help make for a very exciting tournament."
Many of the golf players have participated every year since its inception, including Joe Roe, general manager of the local McDonald's stores, Bill Nikolauk, with 1st Community Federal Credit Union and David Hodges, former YMCA director and founder of the tournament.
Registration for the fundraiser is $150 and includes a lot of amenities including two rounds of golf, two dinners, a tournament shirt and awards in the form of gift certificates from each of the country clubs. Players may register at the YMCA through March 16.
