Golf Weather in the UK

Golf weather is mainly fair weather as the game is difficult to play when the wind blows too hard

, or when the rain rains too heavily, or when the snow snows at any depth. There are those who cheerfully go out in the vilest of weathers to play their beloved game, but most golfers are Sunday golfers who prefer a quiet calm day with sunshine. Their game isn't particularly good in most cases, so why risk the weather making it worse?

There's an old saying in Scotland, home of the game, that goes like this: "If it's no wind it's no golf." This saying most likely originated from the early day of playing golf when a links near the sea coast was the chosen place to play a round or two. The advantages were many. The links was usually a sand based soil, which, with the constant salt air from the sea, meant that the grass stayed very short.

Remember that in the very early days of golf there were no lawn mowers to keep the grass short, so finding a place where the grass was naturally short was the obvious thing to do. However, being close to the sea edge also meant that there were sea breezes. And in Scotland, most likely in Fife near St Andrews where the game originated, the sea breezes can sometimes come close to sea gales. It is in this environment, therefore, that the old Scottish saying had its origins.

Even on flat calm days when the sun shines bright there is golf weather. The putting green may be a perfect example of short cropped grass, but those same short blades of grass are creatures of habit. One of their habits is to follow the sun as it swings its way through the sky. The little blades of grass all face the sun in unison, so depending on the time of day, a critical putt could be won or lost by knowing in which direction the blades of grass are lined up as a ball travelling gently over the grass is very susceptible to even the slightest obstacle. It's good to fit special wheels to your electric golf trolleys in these cases.

Of course, playing golf in really bad golf weather is not advised. There's a scene in the comedy golf movie, Caddyshack, where a golfer is playing in a thunderstorm and not surprisingly gets struck by lightening at the height of his back swing. That doesn't usually happen in real life, which is why the golf season is usually from around April to October when golf weather is at its best.
