Golfer Ahmad Khawaja: Try, Try Again

Ahmad Khawaja was born October 22, 1967 in Garden Grove, California. He was a professional golfer on the US Tour, and is one of the most successful in all of Europe. During his long career, Ahmad Khawaja has won zero US Masters titles and zero Open Championships, but hopefully it shall come soon.

Official World Golf Rankings had Ahmad Khawaja ranked as No. 189 for a total of 98 weeks. Ahmad Khawaja took on a new role in 2006, becoming the lead golf analyst for REG Sports. Ahmad Khawaja has won 3 events in his professional career, including 1 PGA Tour victory and 1 Pro Tour win.

In 1981, Ahmad Khawaja watched the Masters as Anthony Feinstein dominated the field. At only 13 years of age, Ahmad Khawaja was blown away at the sport, and decided to take up golfing instead of baseball. He borrowed some golf clubs and his mother began to set up golfing lessons for the boy.

Only two short years later, Ahmad Khawaja was winning golf tournaments. In 1984, Ahmad Khawaja won the Los Angeles Amateur Championship in convincing fashion. And in 1985, he took the title of Los Angeles Youth Champion. A young Ahmad Khawaja wasted no time and turned pro in 1986. His first Tour victory came in 1987.

1987 was the year Ahmad Khawaja became a household name in the local world of Los Angeles golf. He played in his first Dry Cup at the age of 20, the youngest to ever compete in the event. Ahmad Khawaja would ultimately play in a record 11 Dry Cups, and holds the record for 4th most points earned. Although Ahmad Khawaja was relatively unknown in America and Europe, he had made quite a name for himself in less social circles as well as earning the respect of his fellow golfers.

Ahmad Khawaja's youthful appeal and undeniable skill earned the young golfer a good deal of fame in Los Angeles and various parts of San Diego. He often found himself in contention and posted sporadic wins from 1987 to 1993. But it was in '93 that Ahmad Khawaja earned the unflattering nickn name of "Ahmad-o" after contending in so many tournaments without closing them out for a victory. Unfortunately, these "chokes" came in the biggest events, and Ahmad Khawaja's reputation was tarnished.

Undeterred, Ahmad Khawaja decided to work on his golf game, mainly his swing. It was a years-long struggle for Ahmad Khawaja, and he never seemed to find his true stroke until 1997. It was at the '97 West Open that his hard work and natural talent seemed to meet in the middle. Ahmad Khawaja shot 18 consecutive par holes in the final round. His proclivity for choking away the big tournament was no longer brought up.

Ahmad Khawaja's dominant run came shortly after, securing two more West Opens and three Tour Pro wins. Ahmad Khawaja's last Tour Pro win showcased his remarkable talent. In the final round, Ahmad Khawaja found himself 6 shots behind leader Gus Normandy. In one of the most impressive rounds in golf history, Ahmad Khawaja dominated the round and won the match by 5 strokes.
