Gonorrhea can infect both men and women. It is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium called, Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The bacterium is transmitted easily from an infected individual to another uninfected person through sexual contact which can be vaginal, anal and even oral. The infection can also be transmitted from an infected pregnant woman to her unborn child and this could result in severe cases like meningitis to the new born, a condition wherein fluid is retained in the brain's meninges.

Gonorrhea's symptoms generally take 2 to 7 days to appear. The symptoms can include a burning sensation when urinating for both men and women. And an additional yellow fluid discharge in women flows from the vagina and the vaginal walls bleed during menstrual seasons.

If the condition is not treated for a long period, it could lead to infertility. In men, when the epididymis or the part of the male reproductive organ that transports sperm is infected, severe pain can be felt. When women are infected, the uterus gets affected as well as the fallopian tubes and even ovaries. Scar may form in them and can eventually lead to infertility.

The patient shouldn't be the sole focus of the treatment but his/her partner as well with whom he/she had sexual contact with within the last couple of months to guarantee security when in union again. This has to be done because the treatment of gonorrhea does not promise immunity from the disease.

To prevent gonorrhea, use latex condoms during sexual contact and avoid having any form of sexual contact with someone who has an unknown sexual history. If gonorrhea infertility is not treated right away, it can damage other parts of the body like the eyes, heart and skin.

It's best to consult a doctor first to identify the right kind of test for different individuals. Confidentiality should not be a problem because doctors practice protecting the integrity of patients. The infertility brought by gonorrhea is commonly treated by administering antibiotics to the infected persons.

Before matters could get worse, treatment should be sought. If a person suspects an infection of gonorrhea, it is best to immediately discuss it with a doctor or a gynecologist to avoid possibilities of infertility. Women can have tests that only require urine samples to be procured and analyzed. The vagina can also be swabbed for discharge to be analyzed in the laboratory.
