When you initially start to get into IM and test the waters a little

, it's easy to become overwhelmed. You've probably already read many articles and forum posts that are full of information on how to be the next "big thing". The items on these lists probably all appear inconsistent. One list will claim "patience" is the secret to succeeding in the IM field. Being able to understand business is one other claim frequently made by these lists. Still, another will state that being creative is what will get you ahead. And, as can be expected, there are going to be scores of sales pages claiming they have the software program or course to teach you how to be the next big thing.

Fact: The rest of these things are essential (not so much the software package, but the others). You do need to have patience, business savvy and creativity if you wish to achieve success. Of course, if you are not able to intelligibly communicate with customers and clients, none of the rest of it will actually matter.

There is more to effective communication than publishing an impressive sales copy. A good copywriter can deal with that aspect of your project. A gorgeous web site and extensive FAQ are not what you need for good communication. A good web designer and writer can do those things. If you wish to be a good communicator, you need to acquire interpersonal communication skills, not simply straightforward copywriting. So, what do you need to do that?

1. Answer each email you receive within 24 hours of it arriving in your inbox. This is no joke. You don't have to write a long answer for every last mail. You can simply inform the person who emailed you that you've gotten his email and will be getting back to him shortly. When you do this, try including a a snippet of the other person's e-mail. This helps the the other person tell you apart from the auto responders that everybody else is using.


2. Avoid letting the phone go on ringing. Avoid screening phone calls. Try to answer the telephone by the third ring. Do so even if you genuinely have no desire to talk to the person on the other end. You'll be glad to know that there is, nevertheless, an exemption to this rule. You do not have to answer your calls around the clock. Instead, simply set clear "business" hours during which you plan on being available to answer phone calls. Indicate your business hours on your site and state them in your voice mail message. And, naturally, each individual who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.

3. Follow up with individuals to be sure that they have gotten your memos, emails, letters, etc. This indicates to them that you care about your correspondence with them. It will endear you even further if you take some time to say something like, "Is there anything that I can be more clear about?" so that, if they have questions, you can answer them.
