Good Costume Ideas For Teenagers
One of the fun and interesting things about working with teens is their frequent
, changeable ideas about the world and their place in it. Planning and trying on costumes is the perfect way for teens to try new looks that will help them gain a sense of self, as well as give them a chance to dress up as an idol or show off their sense of humor. Planning out costume ideas with your teen gives you a chance to connect with him or her and build memories.
Commercially produced costumes rarely have the appropriateness or youth of teens in mind. While the costumes may be intended in a humorous fashion, many are simply not appropriate for teenagers. Girls' costumes in particular can be extremely sexy and are clearly intended for an older, more mature, population. For boys' costumes, be aware of rules regarding weapons, even fake ones, in your child's school. Do not send him to school with a fake gun, knife or any other weapon even if it fits the outfit.
With the wide variety of movies, books and television shows dealing with the subject of vampires, it is no wonder that this has created a cult following and inspired many costume ideas. To create a well-designed vampire costume, start with all-black, "Goth" clothing, which can be purchased inexpensively at a second-hand store. Specifically look for a long black coat or cloak with a collar that can be turned up. Add fake fangs from any costume retailer and some fake blood and the outfit is almost complete. Vampires are known for their pale skin, dark eyes and red lips, so complete the costume with some easy face paint, making sure to use hypoallergenic materials to avoid outbreaks.
An area of particular interest is the 1920s, which was a stylish time with outfits appropriate for teens. Girls can style themselves after flappers, with straight, long dresses possibly festooned with fringe, but fine if not. Chunky heels and a long rope of pearls complete the outfit. Boys can wear a suit with a flower in the lapel, and slick back their hair. A boyfriend and girlfriend could design a costume as Bonnie and Clyde.
One of the most fun and easiest period costumes is the 1960s hippie. Tie-dyed t-shirts, older jeans, silly makeup including peace signs, and straight, middle-parted hair (or wigs) make a comfortable, fun and interesting costume. This is a good opportunity to speak with your teen about the challenges and triumphs of this time in history.
TV or movie characters are fun to imitate, and teens with a sense of humor can come up with hilarious costumes, such as Papa Smurf or Scooby Doo. Stylish teens can put on a wig and go as Lucille Ball or a character from Mad Men. Groups of teens can style themselves after their favorite band, or as their favorite movie characters, such as Harry Potter and his pals.
Whether your teen styles his or her costume ideas after their favorite movie character, athlete or subject matter, costume planning presents a unique and important opportunity to spend time together. Keeping in mind appropriateness and comfort, working with your teen to plan and create the perfect costume can create wonderful memories.
