This does not always have to be the case, but most of the time they are small dollar increments off of consumable goods. The reason for this is very simple, and the strategy behind it is very intelligent. After a certain date, perishable goods can no longer be sold to the public. These are the coupons that are used on small cost items that are purchased in small increments. Most efficient use of these coupons occurs when they are carried around regularly and the user is making a single, low-cost purchase.

Bogo coupons require paying attention to the large and small print. This is a practice that is valuable for all coupons, but especially valuable for bogo. Bogo stands for "buy one, get one," and can mean buy one, get one free, or buy one, get one half off. There are limitless possible configurations to this particular voucher, but the aforementioned two are the most common. Read the fine print, because it is important to understand the exact nature of the item that is discounted. If it is buy one, get one free, then there is a 99% chance of getting an item of equal or lesser value as your freebie. If the deal is buy one, get one half off, the item of greater value will fall into the half off status. The idea is for the retailer to retain as much profit as possible, and make the customer happy at the same time.
