Good Outlook For Jobs In Bournemouth
Deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions, agriculture remains the foundation of
Bournemouth's economy; but post-modern automated agriculture actually has reduced jobs in Bournemouth. Automation also has cut jobs in mining and manufacturing even as those sectors continue to dominate the local economy.
As traditional jobs have disappeared in Bournemouth, new jobs have appeared in the retail and service sectors - especially in business and financial services; but the new jobs are neither as secure nor as remunerative as the traditional jobs they replace. As Bournemouth and all of Dorset undertake a comprehensive economic analysis, which will lay the foundations for economic development over the next decade, planners must reinvent the region's economy to meet the twenty-first century's needs, and they especially must promote initiatives to create and retain new jobs.
Green energy project creates new jobs
Early in 2010, the British government authorized Dutch-based Eneco to begin construction of a 1 billion pound wind-power project off the Dorset coast. One of the nation's most ambitious wind-power projects, the installation will drive Great Britain to leadership among the nations in the European Union, providing sustainable energy to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in southern England.
Eneco officials estimate that the project will create at least 300 onshore construction jobs in and around Bournemouth; and the project will create up to 2000 offshore construction jobs, which will pump billions into the local economy over the next five years. Supplementing Eneco's estimates, local authorities predict each construction job will generate at least three retail and service jobs over here.
Manufacturers post new jobs
Auguring well for the future of manufacturing jobs in Bournemouth, local industries posted more than 1000 positions at the beginning of the second quarter, 2010. Industry analysts point out, however, that the new positions come with a caveat: Entry-level workers need not apply. Traditional machining and assembly line jobs account for barely 10 percent of the new listings; the vast preponderance of these new positions require degrees in engineering, materials management, or information technology. On the upside, however, these positions pay handsome salaries, so that they will contribute substantially to the region's economic growth over the next five years, and they also should contribute to a recovery in the housing market.
Still, reading the clear message in this trend, local analysts agree the region must retool its educational system to prepare a technologically sophisticated workforce to meet the needs of high-tech twenty-first century manufacturing. Translation: look forward to new jobs in secondary and higher education.
Small businesses contribute to creation of new jobs.
The region's economy appears to follow other trends in the world's 'mature' economies. The village is re-emerging as the key unit of governance and commerce in Bournemouth and across Dorset, so that economic planners recognize the urgency of creating a climate conducive to entrepreneurship. In the very near future, manufacturers of high-efficiency farm equipment may create jobs in Bournemouth, and they may be joined by producers of solar energy and high-tech medical equipment. As the British economy recovers from recession, also look for recovery of lost jobs in the region's troubled hospitality industry.
