Good Tips On How To Get Rid Of Cat Fleas

The cat flea is a common pest

The cat flea is a common pest. They bite our pets and survive on their blood. The itch and loss of hair can make your pet very uncomfortable. In order to completely get rid of fleas, it is important not only to treat your pet, but the environment they live in as well. Failure to do so will cause re-infestation very quickly.

Cat fleas are not only found on felines. Dogs can be afflicted, and they can also bite people but they can only actually infest your pet. If you understand the life cycle of this pest, you will be one step closer to getting rid of them from your pet and the place you live for good.

An adult flea lays its eggs on your pet. As the eggs dry, they drop off, settling into your furniture and carpets. As they hatch into the larval stage, they survive on organic matter and the fecal matter of the adult flea, which contains the blood the adults have ingested. In essence, the adult fleas provide food for their young by feeding on you and your pets.

In the next stage of the life cycle, the larvae spin themselves a cocoon, where they will lay in wait until a suitable host is available. These cocoons are strong, and can resist pesticides. Once the host is identified, the young fleas leave the cocoon, and jump onto your pet in seconds. The cycle begins again, and the flea is biting your pet again within a few minutes.

If you suspect that your pet has fleas, you can try this simple trick to check. Dampen a paper towel and spread it out under your pet. Gently brush the animal, letting the hair and dander fall onto the paper towel. If there are small, dark particles, watch them for a short time. If they dissolve on the moist paper towel and turn red, this can be evidence of flea excrement, and an indication that your pet has fleas. It is always recommended that you confirm this with your veterinarian.

Once you know for sure, begin treating your pet and home. Carefully read all instructions and warnings on the product label as some can be dangerous if improperly used or administered to the wrong type of animal. Some chemicals can affect people and are unsafe for use around fish tanks. Be sure to follow all directions.

Always ensure that your plan of attack involves your entire house, and any other areas your pet frequents such as the car or backyard. Vacuuming well before beginning can help to encourage the fleas to leave their cocoons, as the vibration works as a stimulant. Once the fleas leave the cocoon, they are far more vulnerable to the treatments and chemicals, helping to ensure a successful result. Always remove and dispose of vacuum bags immediately.

Making the effort to properly treat all areas will help to ensure your success. Keep in mind that repeated treatments can be necessary to totally break the life cycle and prevent re-infestation. Be patient and vigilant, and you will rid your pet and home of these pests.
