In this article I want to focus on how to select the keywords that will make your Google AdWords campaign profitable.

The trick is to choose a lot of low competition keywords for your campaigns. Many people make the mistake of basing their AdWords campaign on 1 or 2 very popular keywords that have a lot of competition. This is a sure fire way to loose money quickly. This is because although you get a lot of clicks, you pay a lot each time someone clicks on your advert. Much better is to select many keywords that have low advertiser competition. These keywords individually may attract fewer searches, but when added together they will generate a lot of searches and clicks. This means you get the same amount of traffic for a lot less money.

Obviously the keywords you choose still need to be as relevant as possible to the services you offer. You can find lots of relevant keywords using the Google Keyword tool. Just type in as many phrases you can think of that your potential clients might use to search for your services online. The keyword tool will show you all the different variations being searched on, along with the search volume and advertiser competition for each keyword phrase.


When choosing keywords it is also vital to put yourself in the shoes of the person performing the search. You need to understand the motivation and mindset behind the search query. Some people will be purely looking for information, some will be be researching products or services and others will know what they want and will be in buying mode. You want to pick keywords that fall into the last 2 categories and if possible the last one.

Let's say you are a real estate agent in New York. It is much better to choose keywords like "2 bedroom apartment New York" than "New York real estate". Not only will the first phrase be cheaper to get listed for, but the person performing it knows what they're looking for and is likely to be closer to making a purchase. You can then direct them to a page on your website that offers exactly what they're looking for. It is much easier to convince someone who is looking for exactly what you offer to buy from you, than someone performing a more general search.
