Google Algorithm Update - Say Goodbye To Minisites!

SP. First Quarter 2011. Google has announced the release of what is apparently a major algorithm change that will, according to their official blog, go to great lengths to further eliminate spam results from search results.

According to the release, just under 12% of search queries will be affected. Among sites targeted for a decreased SERP ranking are what many in the industry refer to as "lean" sites, meaning sites low on original or quality content. Additionally, according to Google, sites that contain higher levels of original research, in-depth reports and thoughtful analysis will be rewarded with increased SERP rankings.

Of particular interest in the fact that Google noted a data correlation and comparison between updated algorithm results and the stats received from the new Personal Blocklist Chrome extension it launched one week prior to the algorithm change. In the statement released, the SERP results effected by the algorithm change matched just under 90% of the user-blocked sites.

On a side note, the algorithm changes are being released in the United States prior to being released world-wide.

This new algorithm update has potentially profound implications for many in the internet marketing arena as many internet marketers rely on what the industry refer to as "mini-sites" or "sniper-sites" as they are sometimes called.

If you are unfamiliar with mini-sites, mini-sites are typically very small, non-authority sites that focus on a very tightly refined niche. A typical mini-site would include less than a hundred pages of tightly interlinked articles all based around the niche subject. Mini-sites are launched with the sole purpose of monetization through affiliate programs.

Typical mini-sites are updated infrequently and contain generalized content and in many cases poorly written content.

Careful note should be taken of these algorithm changes and additionally the fact that Google compared the data to it's Chrome browser extension.
