Google Still Rules Online Shopping Search

We know from a recent study that 61%, or three in five product purchase decisions begin with an online search. If you don't have an online presence and a search engine ranking that puts you, your product and service on the first or second page of an online search engine search, you are missing the opportunity to market and sell, through the Internet ecommerce to 61% of your potential customers.

Given the importance of ecommerce on the Internet for you and your business we want to know more about how to successfully maneuver the Internet. Once question that comes to mindwhich search engine results are the most important? It seems there are three major traditional search engines; Google, Bing, and Yahoo. There are also many new up-and-coming search engines. There are also specialized search engines for specific industries and even general categories such as video and audio search. We'll limit this discussion to traditional search engines.

According to a recent survey by ChannelAdvisor, Google still dominates. "81 percent of consumers begin their product searches with Google and 11 percent begin with Yahoo which is an increase of fivepercentage points in favor of Google, and a six percent decrease in Yahoo usage." ChannelAdvisors 2009

Google also allows online shoppers to narrow their search results down to only shopping results. How is this affecting your personal brand and your product or service brand? Have you listed your products with Google?

Online shoppers can also narrow search results down by only blogs, updates, etc. to get better information about product reviews, discussions involving your industry and other information that may affect your brand or products. Are you participating in these discussions? Do you even know what's being said about you?

How does this information affect your online SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SMO (Social Media Optimization) strategies? It doesn't.

That is if you are following sound advice about branding, SEO and SMO. We consistently promote the creation of valuable content for users through blogs, articles, press releases, podcasts, and videos. Each search engine uses its own proprietary search algorithm to determine relevant content. If you are consistently creating relevant content and not trying to fool or trick the search engines, you will be found and considered relevant whether the search engine is Google, Yahoo!, Bing, or another up-and-coming search engine.

So, in summary there are a few things you can do to promote conversations and search results pertaining to your brand and products. First, get listed with Google. Make sure you are on Google Places and that your products are listed in their shopping results. Second, make sure that you are creating valuable and relevant content for your potential customers. Third, make sure your customers are seeing this content. Network with other professionals in your industry, join discussions, get your current customers talking about your products. Use your Internet marketing tools such as blogs, articles, press releases, videos and podcasts. All of these things will contribute to better search results and more satisfied customers.

Be relevant.
