Google TV Coming to a Screen Near You Within The Next Year

With a global TV advertising market worth approximately 117 billion

, Google's motives are largely financial. In 2009, the search engine company's online advertising revenue totalled 14.94 billion, a figure which would balloon with the addition of the potential of television advertisement.

Google TV offers free internet browsing via the television set. It seeks to integrate the internet experience with traditional methods of televised content. Partnerships with other television hardware manufacturers such as Sony, Logitech, and possibly Samsung, enable Google to embed their software into the products of such companies. In addition to this, Google will be working alongside content providers, but does not endeavour to become an original content provider itself.

The visual elements of the service will closely resemble a minimalist computer interface, with widget s offering information relating to time, calendars, and the weather accompanied by links to browsers, Facebook, and YouTube.

The launch date announcement came just a week after the unveiling by Steve Jobs of a miniature version of Apple TV, a new device which offers the ability to stream content from YouTube as well as film and television show rental. Currently, the product is available in both the US and UK, but has not yet signed any content deals with British networks.

While the mini Apple TV relies on constant streaming of content from other computers in the home, Google offer a fully integrated dual service, with content provision from TV studios forming a major part of the deal.

With the transfer of internet functionality onto the television and into the living room, one of the major impacts of this shift will be the heightened ease and/or convenience with which the internet can be accessed, and with which websites can reach their audience. The service will give rise to an increase in online shopping, research, and communications to name but a few areas. Furthermore, by integrating the leisure and research activities of the television and the internet, Google have provided a perfect platform for the increased efficiency and effectiveness of online marketing.

In terms of conversion rate optimisation, this technological tandemization of the most popular inventions of the 20th century has paved the way for a potentially significant rise in online shopping. Google TV will provide the versatile and logical substitute for the QVC mode of out-of-store shopping experience. The benefits are universal however, with both sides of the service profiting from the internet-television combination innovation.
