Google changes search engine to favour quality content

Google changes search engine to favour quality content

Google believes that high quality online products should be rewarded for providing the quality content to the users and for this it's necessary to change the search engine content priority.

Dozens of so-called "content farms" aim to attract traffic by producing web pages designed to rank highly when users search for common or topical words. Google said that such "shallow" material can be "not very useful" for users. The firm said the "major improvement" in its search algorithms will instead favour "original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on".

Google said it is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded, and that's exactly what this change does. To begin with, the changes will apply to search results for US users only, with the rest of the world to follow later. Around 12 per cent of queries will be affected, Google said.

Demand Media, the leading content farm, which plans a multibillion-dollar IPO this year, said it had seen some of its pages' search rankings relegated and some promoted as a result of Google's action. It's impossible to speculate how these or any changes made by Google impact any online business in the long term but at this point in time, we haven't seen a material net impact.

Earlier this year that search results were being increasingly dominated by content farms. Newspapers and magazine publishers complained that their investment in original journalism was ignored in search results in favour of cheap, intensively-produced, derivative material. Demand Media pays its legions of freelance content producers on average around $15 per article.
