When you think of a web site promotion technique, what do you think of first? Which aspects of a web site promotion technique are important, which are essential, and which ones can you take or leave? You be the judge.

Those of you not familiar with the latest web site promotion technique's now have at least a basic understanding. But there's more to come.

1) Rebuild your website so that it is optimized for search engines. I am assuming that you have built your website by yourself. If you hired a web designer to build it for you, then this might not be all that inexpensive. If you have the skills however, this will be one of the single most effective techniques you can use to promote your website. Once you invest the time and effort to do it, you get paid back again and again and again.

2) Find places to get links from that point back to your website. Ask other business people in your industry. Ask vendors and customers. Ask your chamber of commerce. If you have friends that have websites, ask them if they know of any place that you could get links from that point back to your website. This takes some legwork, but it is well worth it. Just like the SEO investment I mentioned above, this one will pay off every single day over and over. Search engines love links.

3) Create an account with Google so you belong to the Google Business Center. This is very important so that your business will show up in the local search results. If you operate a business that sells locally, this is an absolutely mandatory promotional method. I can think of no other free method of promoting your website that will have a larger impact than this one.

4) Contact websites that belong to link exchange services and ask if they would like to exchange links with you. This works better if you have some other website where you can offer them links from. If you do it that way then you end up with one way links pointing to your site which are way better than reciprocal links.

5) Create a little informational eBook using a PDF file creator like Adobe Acrobat or Cute PDF. These programs will allow you to publish your own little informational booklet that offers free and valuable information to anyone who visits your website. These types of things have a way of becoming link bait. People will naturally want to link to your page where you give it away because people go nuts for free stuff. Linkbaiting is a very effective method of promoting your website.

6) Another popular way to promote your website for free is by creating bookmarks to it at all of the popular social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon.com, Digg.com, Yahoo Buzz and Delicious. The links from these websites can be seen by the search engines. The more people that post bookmarks to your website, the better. This allows your website to gain popularity and helps it rank higher which will eventually translate into sales.


7) Create a blog for your website. The blog can either be on your website itself or else could be on a separate site altogether. In fact, you could even register for a free blog through Google. You use this blog to write relevant information about your industry or your business. By doing so, you develop a reputation as an industry expert. That lends more credibility to your business and any advice you have to offer other people.

8) One often overlooked method of promoting your website is to use methods that can be found offline. There are many ways that businesses use to promote a regular store, right? They advertise using newspapers, direct mail, flyers and even promotional products like mugs or pens. There are countless ways to market a business offline. Why not market your website this way also? You could place a very inexpensive classified advertisement for under $10 per week in a local penny saver. Create some kind of reward for the people who visit your website from that advertisement. Make it desirable enough to get them to act on it.

These techniques are effective when used properly. I can assure you that using them in combination will help to drive substantial amounts of new people and hopefully new customers to your website. If you put your mind to it, you should be able to come up with some other great website promotion techniques that are more specific to your business.
