Gouldian Finches: For Experienced Bird Keepers
Gouldian Finches: For Experienced Bird Keepers
Part of the reason many people choose birds as their pets is because of their beautiful colors. Perhaps the most colorful species of birds are Gouldian finches. Another point in appearance, aside from being colorful, is that they are only about 5 inches in size.
There are three varieties for this particular species and they're divided according to color. There's the Red Headed Gouldian, the Black Headed Gouldian and the Yellow Headed Gouldian. As for telling which of the species is male or female, you just have to look at the brilliance of the color - males have more striking colors. Males also have longer central tail feathers.
When it comes to the care of Gouldian finches, they're actually more difficult to keep when you put different varieties of Gouldian in a single cage. Obviously, you need to have a bit of experience to provide utmost care with this variety of birds. But other than that, you'll have a breeze with keeping these beautiful birds as pets.
If you're wondering about the social habits of the Gouldian finches, they're just like other finches. They don't really like being held and they have a beautiful and soothing chirp. When you think these birds are the right pet for you, you have to buy a pair to keep them from becoming lonely.
Keeping their social habits in mind, you have to make sure that you choose the right housing for your Gouldian finches. At the very least, you need a cage with a great deal of space for them to fly around. The minimum would be a space of 2 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot. After taking care of that, you can go with any design for your bird cage.
The most common housing is made of metal but you can purchase a higher quality kind made of wood. Since finches are generally small birds, you need the bar space of the cage to be inch at the most.
Seed is the primary food in Gouldian finches' diets. A good mix of seeds will be enough for nourishment but if you want to balance the diet of your pet, you can also provide the Gouldian finch with greens like watercress, lettuce or fresh spinach.
This variety of birds has a large tendency to get fat with overfeeding. But that is not enough reason not to give them a balanced diet by adding calcium through cuttlebone which you can buy from your local pet store.
The main threats to a Gouldian's health are egg binding and air sac mites. With egg binding, this is a problem that affects female Gouldian when they attempt to lay eggs. Eggs can get stuck in the birth canal and unable to pass through it. This will result in weakening of the bird and you need the immediate attention of a veterinarian for this problem.
As for air sac mites, this is a threat to your bird's respiratory system. There are many resources where you can read more on these conditions and prevent them from happening to your Gouldian finches.
