Gourmet Greece: The Top Five Local Delicacies
With its endless beaches and crystal waters, there are countless reasons to visit Greece this year
. Not least of all its historic and varied local cuisine. With hungry bellies, we've picked our top five delicacies to tempt you on your next trip.
Delicious dolmades
These stuffed grapevine leaves are a Greek staple and a must try during your holidays. Available in most cheap hotels, tavernas and restaurants across the Balkans, you certainly won't struggle to find them. Often served with a tzatziki sauce, which is a soothing combination of yoghurt, cucumber and garlic, they are a delicious cold or warm appetizer depending on what filling you choose. For a meat treat, opt for minced meat, onion and rice. Alternatively, veg out with aubergine and courgette.
Classic moussaka
While the debate goes on between the Mediterranean and Middle East over where this popular dish originated, Greece's moussaka is definitely the most popular version, and in our opinion the best. Usually served warm with salad, it is the perfect pick-me-up after a long night of partying in Corfu. Traditionally it combines three layers of sauted aubergine slices, lamb mince and a bchamel sauce, as well as a tasty sprinkling of tomatoes, onion and garlic. It's a classic but a deserving one.
Famous fasolada
Often referred to as the 'national food of the Greeks', it would be rude not to try fasolada during your time in Crete and beyond too. A hearty soup, which is made by simmering dry white beans with tomatoes, carrots, onions and olive oil, it can be served warm or cold. A meat-free and nutrition-rich dish, this is definitely a crowd pleaser, especially in the winter when it is served with crusty bread.
Speedy souvlaki
While we wouldn't usually encourage you to sample the local fast food during your holidays, when it tastes as good as souvlaki it is a different story. Available with a variety of fillings, including beef, lamb, pork and vegetables, these tasty kebabs can be served wrapped in pita breads or simply on skewers. In true takeaway style, a variety of garnishes and sauces, as well side orders, can also accompany them.
Sweet baklava
For an alternative sweet treat to your usual ice cream in Rhodes, try baklava. A favourite throughout Greece, this historic dessert, with rumoured Byzantine origins, takes on a number of guises depending on where you are holidaying. With syrup and dough the staple ingredients though, you are guaranteed a calorific delight. Possible fillings include almonds and honey, ground sesame and walnuts.
