Goya - His Legacy

It is not difficult to see the legacy of one of Spain's most famous artists as you travel around the province of Almeria and all the way along Granada and to the inland village of Velez Malaga on the province of Malaga. Many of the towns and cities street names will include a reference to Francisco de Goya.

Unlike some of the more 'robust' and vain painters Goya was renowned for being more vulnerable and his famous self portrait painted in 1815 depicted this extremely well.

The Internet has also contributed to the popularity of this amazing Spanish painter with Google Earth adding a specialist section for the Prado museum in Madrid where users can zoom in to the paintings and even see with clarity the actual brush strokes. This has been an important learning aid for budding young artists interested in the masters works of art.

Goya in history

Francisco Goya or to give him his fill name and title Francisco Jos de Goya y Lucientes was very young when he was first discovered by a local priest. He was just twelve years old when he painted his first renowned works of art for the Fuendetodos church which was located in Aragon where Goya was born. Now a genius and somewhat of a child prodigy from the ripe old age of twelve his career was set to escalate making him one of the world's most famous artists.

When Goya reached the age of fourteen he was give a scholarship under the watchful eye of Jose Luzan who taught Goya how to copy some of his best prints. After four years Goya moved on to the big lights of Madrid where he studied with a very popular German artist Anton Raphael Mengs who had fantastic connections with the Spanish royal family.

Having eventually made a name for himself in the larger circles of artistry and having married the sister of the artists Francisco and Ramon Bayeu, fathered eight children and was commissioned by Mengs, his earlier tutor to paint tapestry cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory.

Later at the age of forty in 1789 Goya was appointed the court painter for Charles IV. Goyas work went through some quite radical changes during the remainder of his life with some rather disturbing scenes of war as seen from his own mind. Goya died at the age of 82 having become one of the worlds best loved artists.
