Graduate unemployment figures are expected to reach record levels in the next few
years and warnings have been issued that students will be facing harsh competition when looking for jobs. The most recent report by the Higher Education Careers Service Unit has was issued just after reports were made suggesting that there were, in some instances up to two hundred and seventy graduates competing for each position.
Job applications have grown by 15% in relation to what they were in 2008 and as the number of graduates increases and the after effects of the recession are felt a big pressure is being put on the job market.
It has been reported that the nest four years could be the most difficult for graduates who are looking for jobs. Careers services have been bracing themselves for the increase in people knocking on the door in response to this.
It has been discovered that out of last year's graduates 22,000were not able to find work- accumulating to 8% of the total number. Recent cuts sue to the recession are obviously partly to blame.
To attempt to help with the economic recovery some large corporations have announced that they will be taking on an increased number of graduates this year. The number of jobs is available this year is up by 18% following the past two year's decline. These figures may not seem too negative but it is important to understand that they literally put us back to where we were in 2006 regarding recruitment.
The amount of applicants has reached an all time high with demand soaring up to 15% compared to results in 2008. On average there are 45 students applying for each vacancy there is. This figure is even larger in some fields- marketing for example has 270 applicants for every position.
