Graduated Pipette: A Useful Device
A pipette is an advanced version of eye dropper or medicine dropper
. This laboratory equipment is primarily used for measuring and transferring specific volume of liquids, fluids, reagents and chemicals. These laboratory instruments play a vital part during several laboratory procedures, scientific experiments, clinical examinations and medical tests. Commonly used pipetting instruments are Pasteur pipettes, Micropipettes, Multichannel pipetting device, automated pipetting device, Zepto Liter pipetting device and graduated pipettes.
A
graduated pipette is also known as a Mohr pipette, after a 19th century pharmacist, Karl Friedrich Mohr. Mohr created this graduated instrument so that he could transfer a specific quantity of liquid. Graduated pipettes are narrow, calibrated glass tubes used to measure and transfer a specific quantity of liquid from one location to another location. A graduated pipette is quite similar to a graduated cylinder. It features a series of graduated lines (lines located at regular intervals). These lines allow the user to measure the volume of the liquid reagent that is being dispensed. These graduated laboratory equipment are used to measure several volumes of a liquid. These laboratory instruments are primarily used to measure very small volumes of liquids and fluids.
These graduated laboratory instruments are much like burettes. These equipment produce more accurate results than Pasteur pipettes, but they are less accurate than volumetric pipettes. These graduated cylindrical devices are open from one end. These devices create a partial vacuum over the liquid holding chamber. This allows the user to draw and expel the required amount of liquid.
A graduated pipette usually features some kind of suction aid. The suction aid is attached to the untapered end of the pipette. It allows the user to draw liquid inside the pipette. There are mainly three types of suction aids, rubber bulb, electronic dispenser and pipette pump. These accessories allow the user to measure and dispense accurate volumes of liquids. Other accessories used along with a pipette are pipetting systems, pipette tips, fillers and dispensers. It is preferable to sterilize the pipette and cover its top with cotton wool before use, in order to minimize contamination.
These graduated laboratory instruments are usually manufactured from glass or plastic. Pipetting devices made from soda lime glass are less prone to breakage. These glass devices can be easily washed and reused. Disposable plastic pipettes are also available in the market. These graduated plastic devices are used for pipetting toxic and viscous chemicals.
The graduated pipetting devices are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, designs, accuracies and precisions. 1 mL and 10 mL graduated pipetting devices are widely used in laboratory procedures and experiments. These pipetting devices are widely used in the field of analytical chemistry and molecular biology.
