About Gran Canaria Island
Gran Canaria, known as the third largest island in Canary Island archipelago, basically has a volcanic origin.This island is often called a minuscule continent' because of its various climatic conditions and a multitude of different landscapes. Grand Canaria Island has 700 000 inhabitants.Climate is partly dry and the weather is pleasant throughout the year.
Weather
During the summer, tourist resort Maspalomas has an average daily temperature around 30 degrees. However, during the night it drops to 20-24 degrees. In winter, daytime temperatures are around 23 degrees and in the night around 16-17 degrees.
Although the climate is almost perfect, going to the island from mid-October to March can seem as a wrong idea. During the winter temperature can drop to 11-12 degrees, followed by a strong wind.
You can get the most pleasant weather in the south coast- Arguinegun because it is sheltered in the bay.
Biosphere reserve
Reserva de la Biosfera or Biosphere reserve covers more than half of the entire territory of the Gran Canaria Island; due to the altitude of the Gran Canaria and its complex shape, there are different micro-climates.This island went through various changes throughout its history; however it still has almost untouchable remains of the past.People who live there try to preserve the charm of the island despite the high demands of the tourist economy.
Beaches
The southern part of the island is particularly interesting because of various beaches.The longest beaches arePlaya del InglesandMaspalomas.
RegionMogan, on the southwestern part of the island, has famous beaches such as Amadores, Anfi del Mar, Puerto Rico and Playa de Mogan.
However, in Las Palmas you can find three interesting beaches Las Canteras, Las Alcaravaneras and San Cristobal.
Hiking
Gran Canaria is ideal for those who love mountain hiking. Mountain landscape is spectacular, with a large number of marked trails for hiking. However, there are plenty of opportunities for experimentation outside the usual path.
Diversity
The landscape of this amazing island is changing rapidly.You will be surprised by canyons, idyllic pine forests and all of a sudden you will face the Sahara dunes.The island is in the shape of a circle and in the middle of it, you can find the highest volcanic peaks.On the other hand, chestnut and pine forests with green slopes run down to banana plantations and arable land in the valleys.In the south and east, you can find amazing wide beaches with white sand.
