Granada Mushing At The Sierra Huetor In Granada

Yesterday we had the pleasure of joining the Granada Mushing sports team and watching

the Bikjoring & Canicross competition at the Sierra de Huetor in Granada. What a wonderful day we had.

The sun was shinning, not too cold and the scenery was spectacular. We set off at 8am from Lanjaron in Las Alpujarras and headed North for the city of Granada. The Sierra de Huetor is North of Granada and is a popular place for sportsmen of all types.

The woodland paths, tracks and trails make for good use among walkers, bikers, runners, domingeros (Sunday Drivers) and of course, bikjoring & canicross with your dogs. There are also ridges and plenty of rock faces for those that like climbing and scrambling.

We arrived just after 9am and the car park was already busy with cars, dog boxes, dogs, bikes, tricycles and people, so we knew we were at the right place. As you got out of the car a smell of pine from the many pine trees hit you. I love the smell of pine.

Everybody was busy getting themselves and their dogs ready to set off on the 5 kilometer canicross competition.

We took our dogs along for the experience and to enjoy a nice walk out in the woods. We decided to have a little walk around the course whilst the competition got started. Signs of wild boar were evident and boar tracks were all over the place.

We walked for about 10 minutes through the forests and came out into a wide open space which had spectacular views of the ridge and the perfect spot to watch the competitors race.

First came through the runners, followed by the bikers and then the 3/4 team of dogs with tricycles followed up the rear.

We watched the competitors then headed back through the forest trails and odd patches of snow, making a good round trip to the car park where everyone was talking, dogs were playing and everyone was having a great time.

Mushing with your dogs is a brilliant sport which both humans and dogs can enjoy to the max. The dogs love running and what better way to keep you fit than a sport you can take part in with your dogs.

As we left we decided to take a drive back through the village of Alfacar. An amazing little village with some spectacular houses and scenery of the Sierra Nevada snows across the distance and views of Granada down below.

What a better way to end a great day out in the fresh air with family and friends.

You can find a good choice of near by accommodation in Granada or opt for a holiday rental in Nerja on the beach or a posh holiday apartment in Marbella which is only a 2 hour dive to the Sierra de Huetor.
