The Grand Arche which was unveiled over two decades ago was to be a tribute to humanity and humanitarian ideals. The rigid cubic archway is the brainchild of a Danish architect and engineer who won the Great National Design Competition in 1982 for their concept. Construction commenced with the involvement of a French engineering company and the structure is covered in Carrara marble imported from Italy and glass.

The Grand Arche was the culminating structure of the Axe Historique, the line of landmarks that is found in Paris; the other striking markers being the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower. Government offices are housed on either side of the monuments splendid white structure. The roof of the Arche functions as an exhibition centre. An elevator that shoots up offers an unparalleled view of the city and takes people on a tour of the marble structure. At night with the lights sparkling and the fountains in front sprinkling, the Grand Arche is a magnificent sight. There is a hint of romance in the air when you stroll down past the fountain with the misty breeze singing in your ears.
