You might think Las Vegas is too far away from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for taking a tour

. The West Rim is much closer and you can cover the 120 miles by plane in thirty minutes. Going by helicopter takes about sixty minutes. That's why many people coming from Vegas visit the West Rim instead of the South.

Something many people don't know is the West Rim is situated on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Plus, a lot of people consider the South Rim the official Grand Canyon because of its magnificent natural beauty.

A Las Vegas plane tour is very enjoyable, plus it is quicker and more convenient than traveling to the South Rim by bus. The South Rim is more than 275 miles from Vegas. It is too far for helicopters to make the round trip from Vegas. And South Rim bus tours are popular, but it's a 5-hour drive from Vegas to the main gates at Tusayan, Arizona. From departure to return, plan to spend 15 hours on a bus tour from Vegas to the South Rim. A whole day and evening will be devoted to your bus trip.

On the other hand, a Las Vegas plane tour takes about an hour. That's a pretty big difference. When you get to the canyon, you will be energized and ready to explore instead of being exhausted from a five hour bus ride. The bus tours have to leave at 7:00 in the morning and plane tours depart at various times during the day.

Airplane tours to the South Rim take off from different airfields around Vegas, but the ones out of Henderson and Boulder City are less expensive. Your airplane will follow the Colorado River as it snakes its way towards Tusayan, which is at an elevation of 6000 feet. Tusayan is the tiny home of the Grand Canyon National Park Airport that is just outside the main gates to the park.

Your plane will fly over scenery below that is breathtaking. In fact, you'll see a large portion of the canyon before you even land at GCA. Once you arrive, you'll hop on a 2 1/2-hour bus tour of the Park. You will get to see Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Grand Canyon Village.
