Caring for your marble or granite floor.

You must buff granite and marble floors every now and then to keep the floors protected.

You should polish your floor until dry after using a cleaning solution. Marble restoring products can revive a dull lackluster floor and can be found at most janitorial supply companies.

All marble and granite types are not the same. Get recommendations from your supplier.

Cultured marble is stronger than other marble and stone; however they lose their luster after a few years of cleaning. Use a spray bottle with a mild cleaner and soft cloth to maintain the luster. Keeping the area wet helps avoid scratching. Never use abrasive cleaners or tools when working with marble or granite.

For tougher surfaces, you may need to experiment with a polishing compound. You can try wax, even car wax to fill scratches.

Stains

There are a number of different type of stains.

Organic Stains:

Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are a common stain. Use a soft cloth soaked with 20 percent peroxide (hair bleaching strength) and a few drops of ammonia.

Oil Stains:

Caused by butter, hand cream, lotion or other similar source. Use a fine powder like corn starch to absorb the material. After a few minutes, use a brush to remove the powder and reapply. Wait at least 24 hours. Scrub with hot, sudsy (detergent) solution, or wipe with ammonia. Rinse with warm water and wipe dry.If this does not remove all the oil, you can try a solvent. Read all instruction that come with the solvent.

Rust Stains:

Caused by metal items such as a metal container in which plant is placed.

Rust stain remover can cause etching, so be careful.

Remove fruit juice promptly to avoid etching. Always keep the area wet when cleaning. Professional polishing may be required to remove etches from marble.
