Granite Tile Flooring and The Advantages of Installing It

Using granite to tile your floors will provide you with beautiful results. Granite is a natural stone that can be used as flooring, counter tops and even on walls. If you are planning to use it to tile your floor there are some things you should consider before your installation.

Granite tiles come in sizes from twelve to twenty-four inches and are typically 3/8 inches thick. The size and thickness will provide you with a durable and strong material to use on your floors. But be prepared, using granite to tile your floors can become quite expensive depending on the size of the area you are planning to cover. Depending on the size of the area you are working with prices can range from the hundreds to thousands of dollars. Granite is one of the most expensive floor coverings available.

There are four main types of finishes applied to granite flooring; polished granite which produces a high shine is best suited for low traffic areas. Honed granite has more of a matte finish and is recommended for high traffic areas, then there is flamed or brushed granite which is best suited for outdoor use. When using granite tile always remember that the higher the shine the more slippery the granite will be. Granite is not typically used on bathroom floors for that reason. High polished granite becomes extremely slippery when it becomes wet and could pose a danger if used to cover bathroom floors.

Granite is also known to stain is something is spilled on it and not cleaned right away. It is recommended that your granite floor tiles are swept or damp mopped everyday to avoid any unknown spills from seeping in and staining the granite flooring.

Before you begin to install your granite tiles it is suggested that you inspect each tile for any imperfections or damage. Since granite is a natural material, it is common that there are color variations from tile to tile, this should not present any problems and may add to the character of your floor. It is important that the floor you are installing the granite tile to be very clean and clear of any debris. A smooth level surface will provide you with the best results once the project is completed.

Experts suggest that granite tile be installed by someone who is familiar with working with granite. Because of the thickness and larger sizes of the tiles, installing granite may not be a job for typical home owner. Hiring a professional will insure that your granite floor looks its best once it is installed and will be something that you are proud to show to your friends.
