Granite or Corian: Which is Better?
Picture this: You walk into your kitchen and you take a look around and think to yourself, "Okay, maybe it's not working as well as it used to." The fixtures are old and in dire need of repair and you finally decide that your kitchen needs a tune-up. Your eyes travel to your worktop, where a lot of your kitchen activities take place, and it's got cracks and scratches and stains everywhere. Since the worktop is one of the most important parts of the kitchen, it's only natural that you want to replace it with material that will endure the daily grind, last a long time and looks great, to boot.
Some of the best materials for kitchen worktops available on the market today are granite & Corian. Granite is a natural rock that is known for its durability while Corian is a heat-resistant , moldable man substance manufactured by world famous brand DuPont.
Selecting the material for your worktop surface is very important because you want to have a worktop that is reliable, durable and will last a very long time. To find out which material to choose for your worktop, here are some good tips to help you make the right choice.
1.Choose a material that best fits your budget. The quality of granite material is variable depending upon the price. Good quality granite is very expensive, so don't be fooled into buying cheap, low-quality granite, which will crumble and break apart easily. For less than the price of a suitable granite you can get top quality Corian by DuPont which is less prone to damage and easily repairable.
2.Choose a material that is long-lasting. Unlike Corian, granite needs regular sealing to maintain its sleek finish. Otherwise, bacteria and liquid will seep through the cracks in the granite and ruin its appearance. Corian does not need sealing because it doesn't crack or stain. If it shows any kind of damage, your Corian can easily be brought back to look good as new with the use of a buffer.
3.Ease of cleaning is important. To maintain your worktop, find one that is relatively easy to keep clean. Luckily, granite and Corian are both very easy to keep clean. However, since granite is a natural material, it is porous. This means bacteria, mould and mildew will thrive in between the cracks, which is why granite needs to be sealed regularly. Corian is a non-porous man-made material & because its joints are completely seamless it withstands bacteria and is easily cleaned with some warm, soapy water and a clean cloth.
4.Heat resistance is important, too. As a rule, it's not a good idea to place your hot pans on your worktop surface. However, granite is more heat-resistant than Corian, and you can place your hot pans directly on the surface. With Corian, while it is heat-resistant, it is more advisable to use insulation pads and placemats between the worktop and your hot pans.
5.Choose a nice finish. The finish of your worktop is largely dependent on personal taste. If you're looking for an earthy, natural feel, granite is the way to go. However, since it is a natural substance, it has a variable texture that will cost much more to create the desired uniform finish across your worktops. Corian has a uniform finish all throughout, is available in a variety of colours and patterns and even when connected to another worktop appears to flow seamlessly.
6.Choose a material that is easy to repair. As Corian is a man-made substance, it can be molded to special shapes and you can have your sink made of the same material, making it very versatile in the kitchen. One of the best things about Corian is that it can be repaired if you damage it.
With time most granite can chip and crack which will mean your complete worktop will need replacing unless you are willing to pay extra money for the very best quality granite mined from the best quarries.
So now that you have an idea of what Corian and granite have to offer, it is up to you to choose the best one. Granite is elegant and attractive as it is long-lasting, if you are willing to pay for the best kind. Corian by DuPont has nearly all the benefits of granite comes in a wide range of colours and patterns and is by far the more user-friendly and cost-effective option.
