Grape Seed Extract For Melasma Or Dark Patches On The Face: Does It Help
?
There are many people who feel that there are some effective internal treatments for melasma or skin discoloration and hyper pigmentation. If you have found this article, you are probably well aware of what this condition looks like and how frustrating it can be. It's basically dark patchy areas and sometimes splotchy areas on your face that can be very difficult to fade. Sometimes, people don't have much luck with the many lotions and topical treatments on the market (or they have a bad reaction to them,) so they are looking to treat the condition from the inside out.
Grape seed extract is a popular choice when trying this method. This extract is a strong anti oxidant and contains procyanidin. This substance is thought to protect the body from premature aging by bumping up vitamin C levels to help get rid of toxins. Some people feel that melasma may be the result of an overload of toxins such as yeast, fungus or copper. So, the hope is that grape seed extract gives you the best of both worlds - antioxidant protection as well as toxin removal.
There was one Japanese study that looked at the effectiveness of this supplement in women who were suffering from hyperpigmentation and discoloration of the skin. The participants did notice an improvement in their skin at the end of the trial, but the full effect came at the end of the six month period.
In my own experience, grape seed extract is definitely a supplement that has a place in my regimen, but I don't believe that this supplement alone would give me the dramatic results that I need and am looking for. If you've spent any amount of time researching this topic, you've likely seen that the treatments for melasma tend to be from one camp or another. There is the camp that believes that you should treat or bleach the skin with topicals or external treatments. These folks tend to look at this as a dermatological issue and use creams, bleaches, and fading lotions.
There is also the camp that looks at melasma as an internal issue. Many believe that it is the result of yeast overgrowth, copper toxicity, or fungal issues. So, many internal treatments (like grape seed extract, MSM, and grape fruit seed extract) focus on this. In my experience, I have had the best results when I combine both methods. I believe that my skin issues probably are affected by internal issues. But for me, over time, they have become dermatological issues also.
This is just my opinion, but I feel that the best approach for me is to take a look at both models, although I always prefer natural options. So, my answer to this topic would be that, in my own opinion, I believe grape fruit extract can certainly be beneficial to your skin and health but, alone, I don't see at as a cure for melasma, although I think it can be part of an effective treatment plan.
From personal experience, I know about a variety of natural and not so natural melasma treatments and have very strong opinions about which ones work and which ones don't. I do feel that some little known and gentle and inexpensive treatments for hyper pigmentation are very effective. You can read aboutmy melasma journeyat http://livingwithmelasma.com/
