Graphic Design Is The Same As Art?

Anyone who owns vinyl records from the 60's probably has one or two of his famous designs right in their own home. His widely-known work is known to millions of people, even if his name isn't, but does this mean it is to be considered art? This designer chooses not to discuss this topic at length. He doesn't even like to use the word "art". To him, all pieces should be called 'work'. Then, when one is really good, it can be called 'great work'. Even better, if it achieves the goal set for it, we can call it good; bad work fails to accomplish the task set out for it.

For example, he claims that his work follows a very deliberate process. A red nylon rope wove itself through his works to the early sketches and concept drawings that begin the design process. Almost like a maze. It's like wandering around without knowing where you are going, but you end up discovering and finding amazing new things during your journey.

Many things inspire his work - one began simply with paper wings and a postcard of an angel. These things hang on a wall that's opposite of the crouched angel that adorns the finished painting. A well-known comic strip is across from another acclaimed work. A poster he created features a famous pianist that is sneezing, making light of the idea that some people have "stuffy" thoughts about classical music.

The artist refers to the world as his visual resource. One poster that he designed for a typewriter company in Italy utilized a famous painting as its theme to convey a distinct message. This original painting shows a dead master, with a grieving dog at his feet. The designer's poster shows the owner as a typewriter, with the dog lying by it.

Thanks to his design an extremely influential studio was opened in New York bringing the concept of design to exciting new heights. Additionally, he co founded a large city's magazine, and established the tone for other city magazines throughout the nation. He also designed the eateries, observation deck and lasting exhibit for one lucky trade center. His work ranges from the internationally recognized poster and symbol for AIDS to a supermarket chain. He was always intent on finding out how far he could push boundaries, and says he's always had a wide variety of interests.

The iconic poster mentioned earlier of the rainbow-hair singer has been reprinted in over six million copies. The poster itself is abstract with elaborate colors in the hair that are similar to yet another famous artist. Many people look at the psychedelic nature of the singer's hair, however, and attribute the work more to drugs than such an artistic response. However, he has never said that he took drugs. Adults can enjoy his work when visiting a playground he created just for them; he also made a children's play area.
