Graphic Designer Software - A Look Into The Multiple Choices Accessible
Long gone are the days when a graphic designer's tools were pen
, pencil, brush, exacto knife and illustration board. Designers nowadays rely on expensive and constantly changing graphic design software. Sooner or later, a designer needs to upgrade their current software or switch to a different brand. The designer must then learn all of the software's functions for this new version. Design professionals may need expensive retraining when the program interface gets changed. As well, there are usually varying graphic design programs used in specific tasks such as word processing, web page creation, drawing, and photography.
For much of the last decade, the desktop publishing arena was ruled by Quark Express. Recently Adobe has made an aggressive attempt to regain its former dominance of the desktop publishing industry. Adobe has already snuffed out many companies that were, at one time, considered competition. Assuming that they do intend to take out Quark, Adobe will become the 'top dog' in regards to graphic design software.
At the end of 2005, Adobe concluded its acquisition of Macromedia which made it the owner of Dreamweaver - usually acclaimed as one of the best and sometimes the most difficult to use web design software available. Adobe Dreamweaver is a great product for professional web designers, and has no real competition in the market. Microsoft Front Page still offers services for non-professionals as well as a few pros who are old-time PC users. Although, Adobe, with the Dreamweaver application, has gained a semi-monopoly in this area also.
In graphic design software for photography there's only one acknowledged leader - Adobe Photoshop. While there are simplified options available for beginners, Photoshop is the industry standard for professionals. Some companies will only produce plug-ins for Photoshop, until Adobe is forced to buy them.
What about graphic design software for illustration? Again, Adobe is the leader, with Adobe Illustrator used and recognized by the most professionals it usually wins hands down against the competition. It is not always, the easiest to use program or the program which has the most functions. It is the one which offers the most compatibility in most places. A Canadian competitor, Corel Draw, is known to be a great program with more functions, however, the files are hard to transfer to other programs and can only be used with Corel. This means the program functionality is limited and decreases it's popularity.
One reason InDesign is making up so much ground is through the ease of use with all the other graphic design programs in the Adobe family. You can easily move between them smoothly and rapidly. You can buy all these programs easily at once by selecting Adobe's Creative Suite.
