. In simpler words, we can define Graphic designing as, A practice or profession of designing any piece of information for visualization in print or in electronic forms.
The job of Graphic designers includes designing layouts for newspapers, creating and fixing advertisements in newspapers, preparing book layouts, power point presentations, Internet banners, business cards, signs, logos, etc.
Basically, Graphic designers develop creative concepts to meet a client's requirements to convey a certain specific message or idea to the mass or target audience by providing a wide variety of graphic products. The products can be anything, ranging from websites, corporate logos or books to posters, product packaging or computer games.
Graphic designing is a highly competitive industry having equal number of men and women working in various graphic designing agencies or in-house graphic divisions of other companies at several locations all across India.
Nature of Job and Responsibilities of a Graphic Designer
Graphic designers do planning and analyzing, and create visual solutions to solve communication problems. They choose the most effective way to get message across in any form using a range of mediums and layout techniques like animation, photography, colors, illustrations or film media.
These professionals work on various projects at one time, no matter how typical they are. Their job includes:
- Discussion on projects and requirements with the client
- Analyzing client's requirements and then developing required concepts to offer to the client
- Research and development on the concepts to be designed
- Producing designs with using a variegated form of media, including photography and graphics.
- Staying updated with the special graphic design programs and technology used in graphic design. Programs include Quark Xpress, Illustrator, FreeHand, Photoshop, Acrobat, Director, 3D Studio, Dreamweaver and Flash.
Future Prospects for a Graphic Designer
- Graphic designers are placed to work in industries like advertising agencies, computer games companies and multimedia companies.
- Designers can work in a number of graphic design agencies that are commissioned by clients to work on their own specific projects.
- Graphic designers can set up their own designing agencies and firms after five or ten years of gaining invaluable experience and skills.
- The potential of Graphic designing jobs in the market is quite high and a job can easily be found in countries like Europe, Japan and the United States, other than India.
At a beginning level, the opportunities and scope for a Graphic designer is great. Although, designers can expect to spend their first few years in earning experience and knowledge, developing a reputation and gathering necessary contacts after working in various companies on a variety of projects. And when a designer has five or six years of experience, he/she may well promoted to a senior designation as senior designer or eventually be promoted to a managerial level such as creative head or studio manager. While others can set up their own companies or work as freelancers for various clients.
