Grass Plugs: The Easiest Way to Grow a Thriving Lawn

If you are having trouble with your lawn or are experiencing bare spots where the grass does not seem to grow easily, consider the investment in grass plugs to remedy your problem. Grass plugs are clumps of sod and grass which have been displaced in order to been transplanted somewhere else. They can be purchased and delivered from a lawn and garden specialist or taken directly from your own yard. If not transplanted quickly, the grass will die, so it's important to install the plugs within a few days of moving them from the ground they came out of. What is often considered an inexpensive alternative to sowing new grass seed and fertilizer, grass plugs are readily available from landscaping companies for home or commercial use. Some climates are simply harder on lawns than others, and variations in the amount of rain and sunlight can sometimes drastically affect the overall appearance and well being of your yard. New grass plugs tend to promote growth around the surrounding areas of the yard without additional fertilization, making it an economical choice for those on a budget. Pay special attention to those areas which have new plugs installed in the first few days afterward, remembering to water them especially. Without adequate water and sunlight, no amount of new or transplanted grass in going to restore the appearance of your lawn.

There are steps which should be taken before you plant the new grass plugs. You need to soften the soil where you intend to install the plugs, so water the areas liberally. Use a spade or a plugger, available at the home and garden section of your local store, to dig the holes. Dig the holes diagonally from each other, like on a checkerboard. Pack the plugs in firmly, tamping the soil around it. Water the area again, and water the plugs on a regular basis for the next seven to ten days. Wait at least two weeks before mowing the grass again. Once the waiting period is over, the plugs will take root, and mowing will be healthy for the plugs and will promote spreading and growth to the surrounding areas. Check on the new grass often, and add fertilizer as needed. With proper care, the new plugs should promote the overall growth of your entire lawn wherever the plugs have been applied. This is easily one of the most economical methods of restoring the areas of your lawn where grass is scarce.
