Grease Guns: Using the Right One for Your Job Will Make the Job Easier
Lubrication bearing, bushings and other friction surfaces is as old as the industrial revolution. Over the last thirty or forty years, there has been tremendous innovation in lubrication equipment in general and grease guns in particular.
You can now get a grease gun with a lever grip, similar to those available for 70 plus years. But, you can also get pistol grip, a variety of heavy duty lever action grease guns, grease guns with the ability to be high flow or high pressure. There are battery powered cordless grease guns in 14.4 Volt, 18 Volt and 19.2 Volt. There are pneumatically powered grease guns and corded grease guns that run on 120V 60 Hz AC.
Whatever the grease gun you choose, the goal is the same; namely, lubricate the bearing. That is it, lubricate the bearing. All grease guns will do this, so how do you know which one to select.
This decision will be based on the environment the grease gun is used in, the frequency it is used and the desires of the user. Let's look at all three variables.
First, what is the environment the gun will be used in? This will vary from the casual home user who lubricates the on bearing on his wheel barrow, to the lubrication professional who lubricates equipment or vehicles all day long. It will also vary as far as the ruggedness of the environment. Is the gun likely to get hit by a forklift or run over by a golf cart? Better use a heavy duty grease gun with a thick steel rod as a lever. This gun will cost ten to twenty times a typical professional grade gun that will produce a similar amount of pressure and flow. In other words, it is not that one grease gun will perform much differently than the other; it is that one will last longer in its environment than the other.
Maybe there are lots of tight corners and there is not room to pump a lever style gun. A pistol grip gun is perfect for this type of application. As you can see the environment will have an impact on the gun selected.
Second is the frequency of use. Taking or homeowner with the wheel barrow as an example, he will not be lubricating very often. Take someone who lubricates equipment for 8+ hours per day as a comparison. He will use it constantly. In cases like the later, a cordless battery powered grease gun will make sense as it will increase productivity (you will be able to lubricate more bearing in a shorter period of time). As you can see, frequency will play a role in selecting a grease gun.
Lastly there is user preference. If the home owner wants a battery powered cordless grease gun and can afford it, why not get it? It is overkill for what he does, but it is his money.
When selecting a grease gun, you should evaluate, the environment in which it will be use, the frequency it will be used and the desire of the user of the gun when selecting it.
Once you select a style, then you can move on to manufacturers and distributors. You can often find what you are looking for on the web at very good prices. Keep that in mind when you purchase and keep your employees happy and watch your bottom line at the same time.
