Great Facts On Who Invented The Sash Window And What Is Its Roots
To find out who invented the sash window and what is its origins one must go back to the 1600s
. A certain person by the name of Robert Hooke experimented with different types of wood and glass panes and came up with a masterful solution namely the sash window. This style is still used today with a few changes here and there, but essentially the sash window is still as popular as it was in those days.
Robert Hooke was an industrious man who coined the term "cell" for the living units of biology. He was also a major inventor and worked on many different projects in this lifetime. He was a skilled biologist, architect and clock maker as well. He also designed many of London's historic buildings and did the surveying of London after the Great Fire of 1666.
Most notably, he loved to potter on clocks and developed the first balance spring. Today that spring is still used in watch making around the world. Apart from watch making, he also had a fascination with glass and this fascination made him design a better-insulated window than the ones they had at that time.
It was only in 1670 when the first sash windows were actually installed in some stately homes around London. Their frames were robust and heavy and they only had a single pane in those days. Nevertheless, they were heralded as a working wonder. They were so well received that the owners of Ham House in London wanted all their windows to be replaced.
Of course today they have changed vastly with the material being either soft or hard wood to lend a more traditional look to a home, or in more modern type homes you will find metal or vinyl frames being used. They reasons for using these materials are because they do not corrode as much as wood and gives better insulation. Other factories will use fiberglass frames that have the advantage of expanding and contracting with their glass panes. They also have a higher insulation rating than plastic or metal.
Then there is single, double and triple glazing which was not available in Robert Hooke's time. This came about as manufacturers realized that the more glass you add the more insulated your home becomes. The space between the glass panels will trap air, keeping the moisture out of your home, saving you more money on your energy bill. Excessive noise can also be addressed with more glass panes added to your sash frames.
If you delve deeper into the story of who invented the sash window and what is its origins you might find some more interesting facts. However, we will keep that for another time. All that is necessary now is for us to make the decision of when we are going to change over to the cost-saving sash windows for our home.
